Gulf Coast Relief Alternative Break
February 20-25
With the support of Maine Campus Compact, Franklin Savings Bank, and Mechanics Savings Bank,
eight Maine students from three different colleges headed down to Louisiana this February. These students volunteered with Habitat for Humanity of St. Tammany West, a local Habitat chapter 45 minutes outside New Orleans, making a visible impact on communities affected by the hurricane.
Working with future homeowners, the students designed and built gardens for six Habitat homes, and they erected the framing of the newest house in the Hope Village Habitat development. Moreover, they explored ways to revitalize their own Maine communities when they returned home. Click here for more information.
Rock for Relief Benefit Concert
December 3rd, 2005
Rock for Relief was a huge success. This past autumn, Maine Campus Compact brought together the bands Pete Kilpatrick, Todd Martin, Stepanian, and Clarias, for a concert to benefit disaster relief efforts in both the Gulf Coast and Maine. The concert raised $360.00, and bands and fans alike had a terrific time.
Day at the Statehouse
March 8th and 9th 2006
In the beginning of March, Maine Campus Compact partnered with the President of the Senate, Beth Edmonds, to bring Maine college students this two day event of training, hands-on experience, and celebration. On Day 1, students received training from Maine House Rep. John Robinson and A Rising Tide's Corey Hascall on how the legislative system works and how to best communicate with legislators. On Day 2, 25 students had the rare opportunity to meet one-on-one with senators. Each student was paired with a senator for a day of committee hearings, legislative session, and caucuses. Day 2 also hosted Maine Campus Compacts awards ceremony, where students and faculty leaders were honored for their commitment to service learning and civic engagement. Congratulations to Andrew Bossie, Steffan Morin, Amy Clearwater, and Katie Seamon for receiving student awards!
People Speak Forums
Through December 2005
This fall, students, staff and faculty teamed up with Maine Campus Compact and The People Speak 2005 to explore the role America plays in the world. In forums across Maine, communities dialogued about national and international poverty, hunger, and homelessness. Congratulations to all who participated. You helped make this year a success!
